Clement, epistles of
Writings from the age immediately after the NT period. The first epistle was addressed to Corinth and is of interest in showing that some of the problems encountered by Paul were reasserting themselves—notably a spirit of faction in which leading presbyters had been deposed. The epistle was probably written in 95 CE by Clement of Rome and it refers to Paul's own correspondence, mentioning the divisions at that time associated with Paul, Apollos, and Cephas. There are also quotations from the OT, cited more for the purpose of edification than as proofs of fulfilment by Jesus. Although it was regarded with respect, the epistle was not in the end included in the NT canon. The second epistle is pseudonymous and was probably written half a century later; its origin and its destiny are unclear.
